It’s the beginning of 2015 and we are already waiting for the coming year, craving for the releases of three big budget tentpole comic book movies: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse.
We have seen several news reports on Apocalypse these days. We have also heard a lot about Jackman’s belief that the recasting of Wolverine is inevitable and earlier there were plans for casting a younger actor in this role. Moreover the recently published comic ‘Death of Wolverine’ left us feel uncertain about how long Jackman will play his signature role. But what Jackman feels?
Jackman explained how he was inspired by watching Michael Keaton in Birdman stating:
“I said to my wife, ‘The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die.’ I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor…I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.”
Perhaps Jackman feels that it is futile to step out of his famous superhero role as Keaton’s character has attempted to do in Birdman. But will Fox let him play wolverine until he dies? Why not, after all Jackman has always shown great enthusiasm for the role and respect for its fans.
Jackman re-confirmed that he has no plans to quit his role as wolverine:
“I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one. I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding.”
“Every time I play Wolverine I want to go further, physically and emotionally,” he added.
We expect to see Jackman once again as Logan in Apocalypse and still-untitled Wolverine 3. Aren’t we? And Fox would probably let him continue playing Wolverine as long as Jackman is willing to play his signature role and fans want to watch him as Wolverine.
